hosts.allow and hosts.deny
Hello to all,
I would like to know more about how these two fileas are working - hosts.allow and hosts.deny. Which daemon is reading those files, what is the structure of the files, what security mechanism they impse, what should be restarted in rder changes in those files to become active etc ... My goal is to restrict the access to HP-UX machines by IP address to certain ports on the UX box via those two files.
Thanks.

Re: hosts.allow and hosts.deny
Sorry. Just noticed that these files are not HP-UX specific but software (probably ssh) cpecific.
Closing the thread.

Re: hosts.allow and hosts.deny
Shalom,
inetd reads and acts on these files.
To meet your actual goal on hpux you would want to install and run ipfilter, which is like iptables from Linux that permits you to deny access from certain hosts by port.
When you need a firewall, use a firewall.
