network latency on PCI-X 1000Base-T card

Is thre a patch/driver required to support "HP PCI-X 1000Base-T Release B.11.11.04" card ?
The system was built from an ignite image of another 11i server, which didn't have this type of card. I am experiencing some network latency to the new server. An ifconfig on the port shows the CKO flag set. Is there additional configuration required to support the CKO option ?

Re: network latency on PCI-X 1000Base-T card

Hi,

If you don't find driver for the card in a core OS disk, download needed driver from the link:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/ProdSearch.jsp?lang=en&cc=il&taskId=135тИП=HP%20PCI-X%201000Base-T%20Release

As far as I remember, I had a big problem when tried to install such a driver because it has many dependencies. Finally I decided to reinstall the computer from scratch, but may by you are lucky. 8)))

Re: network latency on PCI-X 1000Base-T card

Shalom Helena,

The fact this system is from another computer is one of the dangers of using Ignite to replicate unlike systems.

It might be better to re-image the computer using a Golden Image. A Golden Image includes the Core OS, which contains drivers for all supported cards.

That being said, it should be possible with patience to install the needed software off the Core OS CD or the Application CD if available. I'd kind of recommend the App Cd if the driver is on it because it is designed for stand alone installation and increases your chances of avoiding the issues that Victor mentioned.

Re: network latency on PCI-X 1000Base-T card

Thanks very much for your replies.

The system only had the iEther bundle from Sept 2003. I've installed the latest version, and the problem is resolved.

When I treid "lanadmin -x cko ppa#", it didn't understand. So I worked out that the installed drivers didn't support it.
I also read that CKO option was set to ENABLED as default pre September 2005, could this have caused a problem sending/receiving packets from certain applications running on NT as I was experiencing ?

Re: network latency on PCI-X 1000Base-T card

I'd need to see tcpdump and/or log data to answer that last question.

Since you are a new ITRC user, I urge you to assign points to the answers of my esteemed Boss or myself if they were helpful.

Welcome to ITRC.

Re: network latency on PCI-X 1000Base-T card

B.11.11.04 is a driver specification, not a card specification :)

CKO support is in baseline 11i. Whether a given NIC has CKO enabled will depend on the revision of the driver you have driving the NIC.

In and of itself, CKO would not cause latency problems. Latency problems can be caused by lost packets. You can see lost packets at the "TCP" level with netstat -p tcp. You can see if lost TCP losses were "local" by looking at lanadmin -g mibstats
