HP Colorado 5GBe Tape Capacity

I am confused. When I do a full backup, it requires 2 tapes - even though each tape has the compressed capacity of 5GB! The log says the uncompressed data was 4081GB and the compressed data was 3113GB. Why won't it fit on one tape? The Tools say the capacity is 2578GB. Perhaps this is the uncompressed capacity. Please help me. Is their anything I can do to get my backup on one tape?

Re: HP Colorado 5GBe Tape Capacity

Dale-
The actual capacity of one tape is 2.5GB. Thus, if you can get a 2:1 compression ratio, you can fit 5GB on one tape.

It sounds like your 4.081GB of data compresses down to 3.113GB and thus still exceeds the storage capacity of one tape.

Most "data" compresses at about that 2:1 ratio. However, if your data contains a lot of compressed files (e.g., zip files, mp3, etc.), then you will not be able to obtain a compression ratio anywhere near 2:1.

Thank you, Tim. I was afraid this was the answer. Oh, well, I'll buy more tapes!
