ASYNC 8 Message at boot

Has anyone had a problem with the SDLT 110/220 External tape drive and the Compaq 64-Bit/66 MHz Dual Channel Wide Ultra3 SCSI Adapter. Just the tape drive on the card. In an ML370.
When the SCSI card is initializing, it displays the message that the bus is running async 8, how do I get the card to run at full speed. All cabling has been changed and we are on our second card and second tape drive. It's driving me insane....:))
