MSL4048 : maximum number of tape drive

I have an MSL 4048. Can I upgrade it to 4 drives instead of 2.

Re: MSL4048 : maximum number of tape drive

The MSL4048 can take up to 4 drives. HP does not provide the details (or at least I could not find them but I think the MSL4048 is the same as the SUN/StorageTek SL48 which takes 4 half height drives, or 2 full height drives or 3 drives (2 half height and one full height). So it depends on what kind of drives you have now. If they are half height, you can add two more drives, if they are full height, you have to remove them and buy 4 half height drives.

Re: MSL4048 : maximum number of tape drive

See

http://www.datasystems.ru/documents/html/HP_StorageWorks_MSL4048_Tape_Library/12422_div.html

"The MSL4048 Tape Library offers customers the choice of purchasing a library equipped with one or two HP StorageWorks Ultrium 960 Tape Drive, or up to four HP StorageWorks Ultrium 448 Tape Drives."

Hope this helps!

Re: MSL4048 : maximum number of tape drive

The first poster is correct. 4 half height drives, 2 full height drives, or 3 if a combination of half and full height drives. The document referenced in the second posting is out of date and there are more drive types available now.

Re: MSL4048 : maximum number of tape drive

Dear Berag

The MSL4048 enables you to easily manage your media both in and out of
the library with a standard bar code reader and four 12-slot removable magazines. As your data protection needs increase,
simply add additional performance or capacity to your MSL4048 tape library with tool-free drive upgrade kits.

Re: MSL4048 : maximum number of tape drive

Hi

I have this scenario...

Customer previously purchased MSL4048 FC with 1 Full Height 3280 LTO-4 FC tape drives.

Now they want to upgrade their existing MSL4048 FC Tape library and planning to purchase new 4 x LTO-5 half height FC tape drives.

Can they just plug out the full height FC tape drives and put in 4 x LTO-5 3000 half height FC Tape Drives without any issues? Will there be an issue on the drive bay slot in MSL4048?

Is there any additional components that they need to purchase to be able to put in 4 half height FC drives on tape drive bays?

Re: MSL4048 : maximum number of tape drive

Make sure the lib firmware is current and swap the drives.

The drives will even keep the WWN, so you probably need to adjust the server software settings.

Better open your own thread next time.

Hope this helps!
