Restoring tape media on a different drive platform

We are converting an HP MSL2024 tape library from SAS to Fibre-Channel drives to be accessed via a new NetBackup Media server.  Will historic NetBackup 7.1.0.3 media written on the SAS drives be restorable from NetBackup on the fibre channel drives?  ie Can the fibre-channel drives read NetBackup media written on the SAS drives?

Re: Restoring tape media on a different drive platform

It depends on the generation of the drives, LTO drives can write one older generation, read 2 older generations, e.g.

LTO-6 can write LTO-5, read LTO-4

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

So if the LTO drives are the same generation, and will therefore not be an issue, can the fibre-channel drives read NetBackup media written on the SAS drives?

Hi Ian

yes your right. in this case it does not matter if it is sas or fibre attached. as long as the lto tape family and the backup software is the same, it will work. because lto can read two generations back the medias, you would also be able to use an lto5 or 6 drive...
