Rebbot of hpvm after adding disk

Hi All,

Can you please explain me why i am getting this error ?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

# opt/hpvm/bin/hpvmmodify -P testvm -a disk:scsi::disk:/dev/rdisk/disk2612
hpvmmodify: Unable to dynamically create device disk:scsi:0,4,2:disk:/dev/rdisk/disk2612 - Protocol error.
hpvmmodify: Guest needs to be restarted (using hpvmstop followed by hpvmstart) for all changes to take effect.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I searched in google found couple of links but it was not usefull as I was not able to understand.it says when adding disk from VSP to IVM and if  disk count is more than  9 at a time and if maximum of  15 disks can be added from same controller.

But I was not able to find any such above information in Admin Guide.

Regards

Madhu

Re: Reboot of hpvm after adding disk

Isn't this the reason?

Guest needs to be restarted (using hpvmstop followed by hpvmstart) for all changes to take effect.

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: Reboot of hpvm after adding disk

I too have seen such messages to reboot guest after making changes.

but some times when i do hpvmmodify it askes me for reboot and some times it doesn't ask me for reboot.

I don't have logs for above statement but i have seen it.

Re: Reboot of hpvm after adding disk

To be Clear I will explain about those messages I noticed.

I was adding nearly 20 disk each disk size is one TB.

hpvmmodify -P [ivmname] -a disk:avio_stor::disk:/dev/rdisk/diskxxx

for adding disk from 1 to 16 it doesn't ask me for reboot

for adding disk from 17 to 18 it asked for reboot to change effet

for adding disk from 19 to 20  it doesn't ask me for reboot.

I used the same command for adding all disks to same guest from VSP.

I am little disturbed that I am not able to find the proper reason to figure it out.

I am not able to find any documentation from HP.Can you share if  you have any kind of documentation ?

Regards

Re: Reboot of hpvm after adding disk

How about this NOTE in admin guide:

NOTE: If the PCI bus, slot, and target numbers are not specified, then, vPars and Integrity VM
automatically adds up to 14 targets behind a single HPVM AVIO Storage HBA and then moves
on to a new virtual HBA for subsequent additions.
To add more than 14 devices behind a given AVIO virtual HBA, the target number must be explicitly
specified.

For versions below v6.3 new HBA cannot be dynamically added and that's why there is the message.
