Downloads - FTP vs. HTTP - looking for your input

HP is considering changing the default download protocol to HTTP as opposed to FTP (FTP transfers would still be available, but would not be the default method). This should help to resolve an issue that some customers experience when attempting to download from behind a firewall. 

 

We would appreciate any feedback/comments/suggestions you may have regarding this proposed change.

HP Notebook PCs - Error when Downloading HP Software over VPN: Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop computers.
When you are connected to a Virtual Private Network (VPN) and try to download software from the HP Web site, Internet Explorer displays the following error message:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage
Download the software when you are not connected to a VPN or use the following steps to download the software while you are connected to a VPN:
  1. Right-click the file name link on the HP software download page (the file name ending in .exe or zip), and then click Open in New Window .

    A new browser window opens and displays the error message.
  2. In the address bar, replace the first ftp with http .
    If, for example, the URL looks like this:
    ftp ://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL31326/pv-77795-1/sp44473.exe

    Then the corrected URL should look like this:
    http ://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software11/COL31326/pv-77795-1/sp44473.exe

  3. Press Enter to display the webpage and download the software.
