Great news for communications service providers from HPE and Red Hat

Now available:  a powerful solution consisting of HPE Telco Blueprints with Red Hat OpenStack Platform designed world map abstract.jpgspecifically for use by communications service providers (CSPs) seeking to implement telecommunications clouds. Better still, these blueprints are fully engineered reference architectures for network functions virtualization infrastructure (NFVI) that have been validated with Red Hat OpenStack Platform, Red Hat Ceph Storage, and Red Hat Virtualization. The validation was achieved through performance tests of Red Hat Ceph Storage on standard HPE hardware. Complete details are available here.

Ideal storage for demanding object storage workloads

Red Hat Ceph Storage is a production-ready implementation of Ceph, the open source storage platform that manages data on a distributed computer cluster and provides interfaces for object-, block-, and file-level storage. Proven at web scale, Red Hat Ceph Storage offers the data protection, reliability, and availability required by demanding object storage workloads.

This advanced storage solution was designed for modern workloads, like cloud infrastructure and data analytics. Industry-standard application programming interfaces (APIs) allow migration of, and integration with, your applications. Unlike traditional storage, it is optimized for large installations, typically a petabyte or greater. As such, it is ideal for the implementation of telecommunications clouds.

An ideal combination: HPE hardware and Red Hat software

Red Hat OpenStack Platform is deployed on the HPE ProLiant Gen10 family of servers. For purposes of the performance tests:

  • The OpenStack controller nodes were three HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 servers, each with 64GB of RAM, and four HPE 1.2TB SAS disks.
  • The compute nodes were two HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 servers, each with 64GB of RAM, and four HPE 1.2TB SAS disks.
  • The Ceph storage nodes consisted of three HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen10 servers, each with 96GB of RAM, and 14 HPE 2.4TB SAS disks. The Ceph storage consisted of RAID 0 storage. RAID 1 was used on controller and compute nodes.
  • The software versions used were Red Hat OpenStack Platform 13, Red Hat Ceph Storage 3.3, Red Hat Enterprise Linuxยฎ 7.6, CentOS 7.6, and Flexible I/O Tester (fio) 3.1.

The following tests were performed:

  • Latency testing
  • IOPS and throughput testing
  • Scale-up testing

An outstanding choice for your move to the cloud

As evidenced by the performance testing, Red Hat Ceph Storage with HPE Telco Blueprints generates numbers that show strong performance and evidence of readiness for large-scale performance. The fact that HPE and Red Hat have validated and tested the configuration also accelerates the time to value of the solution. More information about this performance testing and the suitability of this solution for implementing telecommunications clouds for CSPs is available at the following sites:
