HPE is building on our partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) by extending HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery so that this simple, cost-effective backup solution can protect containerized apps and clusters running on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (EKS). Find out more about the key features and the benefits they bring to your organization.

HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery is designed to protect on-premises and cloud-native workloads across hybrid cloud. The service provides efficient and automated data protection. All capabilities are delivered as-a-service so there is no backup software or backup hardware to separately manage or maintain. The components that need to be run in the protected environment are service managed and installed. Cloud-native technology means fast availability of new features through automatic and non-disruptive updates to the service. We have made significant enhancements to the service based on your feedback – and now you can deploy HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery to protect Amazon EKS.

Backing up Amazon EKS clusters does not require you to be a Kubernetes expert. There’s no need for complex install scripts or kubectl commands for scheduling backups. 

DevOps backup enabled

Backs up critical namespace and cluster-wide resources of an EKS application, such as StatefulSets and ConfigMaps, as well as the associated storage used by persistent volume claims (PVCs)  

Policy-driven protection

Protect Amazon EKS namespaces with multiple levels of recoverability: 

• AWS native snapshots orchestration by HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery enables Amazon EKS cluster backups within the registered AWS account in the region hosting the protected Amazon EKS namespaces.  
• Easily import existing AWS snapshots into HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery, empowering you to manage all backups from a centralized management console. 
• Backup to HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery Cloud Protection Store for long-term cost-effective retention. 

Cost optimized

HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery is built on the HPE StoreOnce Catalyst protocol which provides space efficient backups delivering superior storage efficiency as compared to alternate solutions. This service stores the backup copies in a compressed deduplicated format in Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) driving down the cost of long-term retention in the Cloud Protection Store. 

Neutralized threats

Backup and recovery from immutable copies to safeguard against malicious threats like ransomware using HPE GreenLake for Backup and Recovery to protect Amazon EKS applications and clusters enhances cloud-native backup capability.. Customers have been using this service to protect Amazon Elastic Block Storage (EBS), Amazon Elastic Cloud Compute (EC2) and Amazon Relational Database Service (RDS). Now, with added support to protect Amazon EKS clusters, you get a comprehensive backup solution to protect your AWS resources. This new feature strengthens our partnership with AWS, empowering you to run and scale Kubernetes in the AWS cloud with the confidence that it is always protected.
