ESXi - Bridge Aggregation on HP-5900

Hi All,

We have 3 ESXi 5.1 hosts and two HP-5900 switches

1. Each ESXi host has 6 connections, 3 connections to each HP5900 switch. All the 6 connections are aggregated on the switch.

2. ESXi-1 = Bridge Aggregation 1 (6 uplinks)

     ESXi-2 = Bridge Aggregation 2 (6 uplinks)

     ESXi-3 = Bridge Aggregation 3 (6 uplinks)

3. The ports on the switch are trunk ports.

4. Once IP is assigned to ESXi-1/2 and 3. The IPs are pinging to each other from ESXi-1 to ESXi-3 but ESXi-2 is not active on the network. Route based IP hash is set on the vSwitch.

5. We reconfigured ESXi-2 but issue persists. Is there any config to be done on the switch. Please help.

THanks,

Deep

Re: ESXi - Bridge Aggregation on HP-5900

I ran into this yesterday. On ESXi, the Management Network doesn't inherit the settings of the vSwitch by default. Go to the properties of the vSwitch and edit each of the 3 items: vSwitch, VM Network, and Management Network. You should see that the VM Network is configured to inherit the settings of the vSwitch but the Management Network is not. You have two choices:

1. Configure the Management Network to inherit the settings of the vSwitch by unchecking the boxes next to Load Balancing, Network Failover Detection, Notify Switches, and Failback on the NIC Teaming tab

2. Leave them checked and configure Load Balancing for "Route based on IP hash" on both the vSwitch and Management Network. You should also check the VM Network but it should be configured to inherit by default.

Hope this helps,

Eric
