HPUnix:Drive Enlcosure (Jamacia Box)

We had a drive enclosure go bad. We have an HP guy coming out to fix the problem but I'm wondering what kind of problems we could come across after the new drive enclosure is put in

Because these are so simple, it's very unusual for a JBOD to go bad. The only thing to make certain is that the SCSI address DIP switches are set to the same values as the original and that the disk modules are reinserted in the original positions. Of course, you must also ensure that the external cables/terminators are also reinstalled as they were.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

We have owned hundreds of HASS racks over the past six plus years and we have never had any chassis fail. It's probably just a power supply, fan, or disk failure, but not chassis failure.

Re: HPUnix:Drive Enlcosure (Jamacia Box)

There's one more component Harry did not mention. It's backplane. But it has no active components and can fail only in case of mechanic harm (damage, fire, etc).
Power supplies usually fail with yellow led, but can die with green - in this case simply touch front of power supply to check its temperature and airflow is running;
Disks can fail and hang whole bus - check disks having led constantly on w/o host activity, pull disks one by one and check with 'sea' in PDC if it works;
Check/replace terminators, SCSI connectors and pins are not damaged

When the enclosure is replaced:

Take a note of the scsi ID's on the back.
Mark the disks so that they are replaced in the same slots.
Ensure the cables are placed back correctly - bent pins on the scsi cables are probable the biggest problem and ensure the SCSI ids on the new array match the old.

There are "per say" no active components on the backplane.
But there are components on the backplane. I have seen power supplys shut off and on, fault, etc
fixed by replacing the backplane only. Sometimes the power supplys cycle a few times a day and sometimes appear to be bad but they actually work fine in another jamacca product.
