How is Artificial Intelligence helping us achieve the Sustainable Development Goals?

In one of our previous blogs, we have discussed how Artificial Intelligence (AI) is helping meteorologists predict future weather patterns. Today, let's talk about AI's potential to accelerate global efforts to protect the environment and conserve resources. As climate science and natural disaster prediction and recovery become more urgent, scientists are discovering the true potential of AI in the field.

• AI improves agriculture with the help of automated data collection, and corrective actions via robotics which helps in the early detection of crop diseases, while farmers hope to increase crop yields and reduce water requirements and pesticide usage.
  
  
• The technology can also "be used to protect oceans from illegal, overfishing. Satellite data and data of ship movement are used in a machine learning algorithm, Global Fishing Watch which can be used to identify where boats are fishing illegally. This is protecting marine life and protecting overfished areas".
  
  
• Besides generating more accurate forecasts, AI can also be used to improve ‘nowcasting’. This means climate experts can now have quick weather predictions that can be typically done just within two hours, providing minute-by-minute precipitation forecasts. Furthermore, integrating AI into weather models can enable them to quickly process satellite images for nowcasting.

New technologies like AI is helping us build better ecosystems as well as find remedy to the damages done to the environment. "Fundamentally, AI will be the bedrock of our future efforts to undo the damage already done to the planet while figuring out scalable solutions to sustaining our species' energy, food, and water needs". Having said that, we all have a part to play in tackling environmental challenges and building a more inclusive society. We believe that social responsibility isn’t just about creating a better planet; it’s also about building a better business.
