ftp-ing multiple directories NT -> hp-ux

Hi,

I would like to use ftp to fetch a directory with subdirectories from windows to hp-ux. I have seen that the best way (without using xftp) is to tar the directories into one file then ftp that.

Which program can I use on windows to zip everything up and still be able to unzip it with tar or gzip on unix?

Thanks,
Pete

Re: ftp-ing multiple directories NT -> hp-ux

Easiest would be a tar.exe
Here is one.

Well, I can't say it didn't work because it did - shame about all the file and directory names longer than 8 characters :-(

Guess it has to be done manually after all.

Winzip has a capability to understand tar and compressed files. I haven't tried to create an archive
with a tar format, but it should be possible.

Hmm, just tried to create a tar file with win zip 7 and 8. 8 got close but said it can't create tar, arc etc files. Did mention something about UUencoding is possible but apart from ringing some faint bells it doesn't mean anything to me.

Just create winzip archives on Windows, ftp to the Unix server and install the HP equivalent tool to unzip on the HP end;

unzip

You can download it from http://hpux.csc.liv.ac.uk/
Just do a search for unzip.
Im from Palmerston North, New Zealand, but somehow ended up in London...

OK,
I found another source:

Search for tar in rubrik "PC Downloads"
