IGNITE.... using ignite tape to boot a new system

All,

This may seem completely obvious, but being relatively new in HPUX world and having inherited a system 'as is' thought someone would know of the top of their heads....

We currently have a D350 9000 system running HPUX11 that produces an IGNITE tape everyweek and backs up data every day as means of providing a path to recovery in a disaster...

We are looking at simulating a DR and have booked for a similar D350 system with appropriate tape drives to use as a basis to test DR....

The system is wholly like for like excepting the disk subsystem.

Is it possible to recover, using the ignite boot tape, onto the DR system despite differences in storage hardware? I am guessing not.... based upon the limited amount of documentation that has been handed over with the system....

Any comments / help appreciated. I am off to perform a google search on ignite manuals / search HP's website in the meantime.

That is exactly what Ignite is designed for. You boot off the tape, interact with the process and proceed to allocate the disks available into your new root volume group. After you get the root VG built, you can then allocate other disk resources into VGs/LVs and use your conventional backups to rebuild your data in them.

Hello,

Your recover will works but perhaps interactively.
In fact when you boot on an ignite boot tape, if the hardware isn't the same, the boot process stop and give an user install interface like when you install hpux from CDs. If your disk is larger enough you can do "next next next" and your system will be recover.

Yes, a similarly configured D class box should be recoverable with your exiting Ignite tape. Note that Ignite does a bad job backing up data. If the database is open, that backkup is useless.

It does a wonderful job backing up system boot configuration (vg00).

If the tape drive is compatible, you should have no issues. Ignite has a keyboard intervention that you need to use after booting from tape so that you can customize the recovery to the second server.

If you are practicing, you must change the hostname and ip address of the second server if its on the same network.

If you've worked with other UNICES/Linux.. then the best way to get comfortable with Ignite-UX and the recovery/restore part is to try it and do it SEVERAL TIMES (and not be afraid..) and when faced with an obstacle/issue that you do not understand - refer to the manual or ask this forum. Best way to learn IMHO.

Generally, you boot your ignite tape for which you MUST interact with Ignite-UX so you can custom size your OS disks which are as you mentioned different from the original. If your backup routine (Ignite backup routine) has the -I option, you need not worry about keeping an eye on that Press any key to halt that auto Ignite restore.
