problem about "ident"

The deamon "identd" is in /etc/services and /etc/inetd.conf

ident stream tcp wait bin /usr/lbin/identd identd

Who can tell me what is the "ident"?
Can I kill and stop it in my system?

Re: problem about "ident"

Do a man on identd.

"identd is a server which implements the TCP/IP proposed standard IDENT user identification protocol as specified in the RFC 1413 document.

identd operates by looking up specific TCP/IP connections and returning the user name of the process owning the connection."

I believe it does not normally run, therefore you should be able to kill it. Check your /etc/inetd.conf file to see if it is getting started there.

Sorry - meant to say:

Check your /etc/inittab file to see if it is getting started there.

Re: problem about "ident"

If you are running ServiceGuard, you do not want to kill this service.
If it ain't broke, I can fix that.
