The name of the system is bway7. We don't use DNS isn our enviroment. I have made all of the proper edits to the /etc/host file and still I get a name server timeout when I try to send a mail message.

what about your /etc/nsswitch.conf file?
If you are not using DNS
the first line should say
hosts: files
and are you logged in as root when you try to start sendmail?
