/var/preserve : what is the content of this directories?

Hi all,
i found that on my system running HP-UX 11.0 the "/var" directory space is getting smaller. and this is because lot of file was created under the "/var/preserve" directory.

so, what is this files for and can i delete all of this file.

one more thing, there is a directory under "/var/crash"
created, (it is "/var/crash/crash.0") this is because the system was crashed last time...so, to clean up the space, can i just delete this "crash.0" directory?

Mike

Copy to tape the crash dir and get HP to check as to why the system crashed and then delete the crash.0 files.

Also chech the var/adm dir for large files.

Re: /var/preserve : what is the content of this directories?

Editor files (files from ex and vi) get saved in /var/preserve for recovery.

If the files are old, they can be safely removed.

Re: /var/preserve : what is the content of this directories?

yes the /var/crash dir files should be analysed for the reasons of the system crash.

Copy it to a tape and find and fix the cause of the crash.

/var/preserve dir is used to store saved files those were created due to a system crash or abnormal termination of vi or ex

They are vi save files. You can trash them if you don't need to recover them.

Re: /var/preserve : what is the content of this directories?

Depending how long ago, and if you actually really care about what happened to your system, you can have that crash analyzed by HP (which I would recommend), so before deleting it, put it to tape and have HP look at it. Then you can delete that whole crash.0 directory.
Cooperation is doing with a smile what you have to do anyhow.

Re: /var/preserve : what is the content of this directories?

Hi:

The '/var/preserve' directory holds recovery files from aborted 'vi' sessions. Based on modification dates you can remove what you want.

The 'var/crash' directory holds dump information from a system panic that you might want analyzed by HP. IF not, or after analysis, you may delete the files therein.

Regards!

Sorry, I should specify in the /var/preserve directory you have vi aborted session files.
