Removing a Synergy Frame - Live

Hi,

I would like to remove an enclosure from a logical enclosure without downtime. I'm struggling to find documentation on this but I would hope just disconnecting the second enclosure, then moving the 40Gbit Eth module from Frame2 IC6 to Frame1 IC6 would just magically work.

Can you please advise how to do this and possible risks to be aware of?

Frame 1 - primary - contains all blades
IC1 = VC 16Gbit FC
IC2 = VC 16Gbit FC
IC3 = VC 40Gbit Ethernet
IC4 = VC 16Gbit FC
IC5 = VC 16Gbit FC
IC6 = 20Gbit Link Module

Frame 2 - secondary - no blades
IC1 = empty
IC2 = VC 16Gbit FC
IC3 = 20Gbit Link Module
IC4 = empty
IC5 = VC 16Gbit FC
IC6 = VC 40Gbit Ethernet

There are 2x Frame Link modules per enclosure wth link ports connected.

There is 1x Composer module per enclosure.

I'm sorry but the magic you hope for is simply not there.  There is no feature to reduce or shrink a logical enclosure.  Thereis no ability to modify the existing enclosure group and update accordingly-- only increase/grow was implemented.

That means to reduce, shuffle, or otherwlse split a logical enclosure requires complete downtime, deletion of all enclosure and profiles, and recreating it from the ground up.  There are scripts to save off that information; but that far exceeds my ability to offer advice here.

If the second chassis was to fail, the primary chassis would continue running, right?

Let's say that I failed the second chassis, rebuild this chassis as a new chassis, migrate profiles, but only have 1x 40Gbit Eth module. Migrate blades across. Is it possible to create a LIG with 1 module or will I need an extra 40Gbit Eth module for this plan to work.

If the environment is properly configured for "HA" with fully redundant storage and networking (from the servers through the external environment), then yes if the power was removed from the second frame the first one will continue running-- with potentially half the network, for example.  There would be persistent yellow and red alerts throughout the entire environment until the equipment was replaced.  You would not be able to define any new workload or networking configuration until things were restored.

No you cannot construct anything with the other frame without purchasing the missing pieces for a minimum configuration depending on your requirements.

You will not be able to just "replace" the missing 40Gb module in the first frame; as I said there is no shrink or split feature.  Things would be a total mess forever.  This is not a constructive path to consider.
