I plan to add disks to the 3par the following steps:

1. Do the pre-check.

2. If everything is ok, I will add the phisycal disks to the 3par.

3. After adding the disks I run the following command: starttask admithw -notune -ni

Are these steps corect for me?

When will run the admithw process?

When will I use the new free disks space to extend volumes?

How can I check if admithw success?

Hi adam900331,

Before adding the new disks to HPE 3PAR StoreServ Storage, please check

1. Drive Compatability with the system
2. Firmware compatability with current OS version running on your HPE 3PAR
3. After inserting the Physical disks in to the magazine, run the command "admitpd"
4. Then run the command "servicemag status -d" to verify that the new disk is functioning properly

I would recommend you to add new disks in non business hours with downtime.

Hope this helps.!!

Regards
Anil

#2, the firmware compatibility is not a requirement. Anyway, the system will update drive firmware to the compatible version during admitpd/admithw stage. Rest of the considerations are 'yes'.

Regards,
Srinivas Bhat

If you feel this was helpful please click the KUDOS! thumb below!
Note: All of my comments are my own and are not any official representation of HPE.

Hello @adam900331,

admitpd will be fine in this scenario. Tunesys is optional. If you see imbalance between the existing PDs and new PDs. then you can consider to run the 'tunesys' at CPG level. The command is 'tunesys -cpg <CPG name>'.

Difference between admithw and admitpd:
admithw - Admits any new hardwares including PDs, cages etc. into the system. Also updates the component firmware to the compatible version with the current 3PAR OS version of the system.
admitpd - Admits any new PDs (Physical Drives) into the system. Also updates the PD firmware to the compatible version with the current 3PAR OS version of the system.

admithw is for any hardware.
admitpd is limited to only PDs.

Regards,
Srinivas Bhat

If you feel this was helpful please click the KUDOS! thumb below!
Note: All of my comments are my own and are not any official representation of HPE.

Hi adam900331,

The Tuning function analyses the Storage System Virtual Volumes, Logical drives, and Physical drives to balance the resources for delivering optimum performance.

You need to run the "tunesys" command manually.
Showtask - active will show you the all the active tasks on the Storage System. You can runthis command after you run the tunesys command to see the progress.

Please refer to the below URL for more information on "tunesys" command (Page no: 734)
<STRIKE>https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=c04204279</STRIKE>

Hi adam900331,

After adding the disks, you may need to run the command "admitpd". Running this command will update the PD firmware
to the compatible version with the current 3PAR OS version of the system.

admithw - Admits any new hardwares like cages, power module, etc. into the system. Also, this command updates the component
firmware to the compatible version with the current 3PAR OS version of the system.

After this, you may run the command "showinventory" to verify the hardware installation is done successfully.

Run the command "showpd". This will list all the inserted physical disks of the storage system. The newly inserted PDs are ready to be used if the status shows "normal".

Hope this helps.!!

Regards
Anil
