Server Storage Considerations / Best Practices

Hardware is ProLiant XL420 Gen10 with 16TB 12G SAS HDD. (384TB) Total.

This will used for Video Recording Storage.

Plan is Apollo will be ESXi and VMs Windows. There will be 7 datastores one for each VM.

Plan is to create 7 Logical Drives each RAID6 and to match the storage needs of the VMs so something like this.

LD1 = 64TB, LD2 = 50TB , LD3 = 50TB, LD4 = 30TB , LD5 = 30TB , LD6 = 48TB , LD7 = 48TB

All Drives will be avalible for each Logical Drive

Will having this meaning Logical Drives cause any issues? Is there a better way to design this?

Hi,

Video recording workloads are typically sequential and require high throughput. RAID 6's parity calculations can introduce latency, potentially affecting performance. For workloads demanding high sequential read/write speeds, RAID 0 or RAID 10 might be more suitable, as they offer better performance at the cost of reduced fault tolerance.
