Hi everyone,

I’m currently architecting a data protection strategy for our HPE Alletra 5010 (Hybrid) environment and would appreciate some input from those of you already running this platform.

Our Goal: We need a robust, low-RTO (Recovery Time Objective) strategy that enables both rapid local restores and reliable remote disaster recovery. Specifically, we want to confirm our approach for:

Local Recovery: Using native array snapshots for near-instantaneous restoration of volumes and files.

Remote Recovery: Leveraging periodic asynchronous replication to a secondary Alletra array to ensure business continuity.

My questions for the community:

Orchestration: Are you primarily using the Data Services Cloud Console (DSCC) to manage your replication schedules, or do you prefer to manage protection policies directly on the local array for more granular control?

Performance: For those managing hybrid workloads on the 5010, have you noticed any significant performance impacts when initiating recovery from snapshots that have aged out of the flash/cache tier to the HDD tier?

Consistency: We are aiming for app-consistent snapshots (e.g., using the Windows Toolkit/VSS provider). Does anyone have specific tips or "gotchas" regarding the synchronization interval when managing these for remote replication.

Best Practices: Is there a common "rule of thumb" for retention policies on the remote target array that balances storage efficiency with the need for long-term recovery points?

Any shared experiences or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

When designing a snapshot and replication strategy for HPE Alletra 5010 (Hybrid), I typically consider the following best practices:

1. Define RPO/RTO clearly
- Align snapshot frequency with business requirements
- Avoid over-snapshotting, especially on hybrid systems

2. Optimize snapshot scheduling
- Use application-consistent snapshots where possible
- Stagger schedules to avoid performance spikes

3. Replication strategy
- Use Remote Copy with appropriate mode (sync vs async)
- Async is usually preferred for longer distances to avoid latency impact

4. Capacity planning
- Monitor snapshot growth (copy-on-write impact)
- Ensure sufficient space for retention policies

5. Performance considerations
- Evaluate workload patterns (random vs sequential I/O)
- Be mindful of replication bandwidth and link saturation

6. Testing and validation
- Regularly test recovery from snapshots and replicas
- Validate failover scenarios

7. Monitoring
- Use InfoSight to track trends, anomalies, and capacity usage
- Set alerts for replication lag or failures

In hybrid systems like Alletra 5010, balancing performance and protection is key, especially under mixed workloads.

Hope this helps — interested to hear how others are designing their strategies as well.

Regards,
Carlos Parra Solano
HPE Master ASE Storage

Hi,

Great questions — this is a very common design scenario on Alletra 5010 hybrid systems.

Here’s how I usually approach it:

1. Orchestration (DSCC vs local array)
In most cases, I recommend using DSCC for centralized visibility and consistency across arrays, especially in multi-site environments.
However, for critical workloads requiring tighter control or lower latency in policy execution, managing protection policies directly on the array can provide more deterministic behavior.

2. Performance (snapshots on hybrid tier)
Yes — there can be noticeable impact when recovering from snapshots that have aged into the HDD tier.
In hybrid systems, I typically recommend:
- Keeping short-term snapshots aligned with the flash/cache tier
- Using more aggressive retention only on the replication target
- Testing recovery times periodically to validate RTO expectations

3. Consistency (application-aware snapshots)
Using VSS / application-consistent snapshots is definitely the right approach.
One key consideration is ensuring that the snapshot and replication intervals are aligned — otherwise you may replicate crash-consistent copies instead of app-consistent ones.

Also, avoid overly aggressive scheduling, as it can introduce overhead on both the host and array side.

4. Retention best practices
A common rule of thumb I use:
- Frequent short-term snapshots locally (e.g., hourly/daily)
- Longer retention on the remote array (daily/weekly)

This helps balance performance and capacity, especially in hybrid environments.

Finally, InfoSight is extremely valuable here to monitor snapshot growth, replication lag, and workload behavior over time.

Hope this helps — would be great to hear how others are handling hybrid-specific challenges as well.

Regards,
Carlos Parra Solano
HPE Master ASE Storage
