I recommend 6 RAID five array with one global hot spare. This provides 6 individual logical units, when a drive fails and is replaced, only six drives have to be rebuilt instead of all 42. Also, in case of drive failure, one hot spare can service any of the 6 arrays. The MAS100 has four SCSI buses, bus A is slots 1 to 7 of shelf one, bus B is slots 8 to 14 of shelf one, bus C is 14 slots of shelf 2 and bus D is 14 slots of shelf 3. For performance, the drives in each of 6 arrays should be spread across the four buses. The following shows drive location for 6 arrays, 1 through 6, and H for the hot spare.

Shelf One Bus A and B
1234567 1234567

Shelf Two
11223344556677

Shelf Three
1122334455667H

Regards,
Tim

Thanks Tim,

I never knew about the 4 buses and what you have said makes perfect sense. I've been searching for this for ages!!
GoldDust. HP should make this info available to everyone buying an MSA
