Managing an HP StorageWorks drive array

I have an HP StorageWorks M6612 (part number AJ832A) currently connected to my HP DL380G6 via two mini-SAS cables. Everything functions fine, but the power consumption of the enclosure seems high (~200W+ when no disk activity is happening) and the fan speed is nothing short of screaming levels of loud.

At this point I've tried researching the device, but I have found no reasonable documentation via Google or HP and was hoping that perhaps somebody here could chime in on whether what I'm seeing is normal or not. If it is, I will just learn to live with it, but I'm kind of hoping it isn't for the sake of my ears and wallet.

Hello @sarjekemo,

Is the excessive blower sound due to wear and tear or mechanical reasons or sensor/software malfunctioning?

For mechanical reasons, you try some foam/thermocol support to absorb excessive vibration, clean the blower and it's motor as much as possible, avoid dust, try to use some thin silicon at the joints, clean and tightly reseat the screws.

Also please check if you find this kind of thermal configuration to switch to 'optimal cooling'.

I too found 5 of these M6612 enclosures at my company and am in the process of re-purposing one of these.
I would guess that you're connecting the M6612 to your ProLiant using only one of the controllers on the enclosure. If so, these servers/appliances usually guess that there is something at fault and blow at full force in order to provide extra cooling to the "surviving" controller. Could also be that you are using unsupported hard drives. Take this with a pinch of salt, of course.

I am curious, though, what is the capacity of the hard drives you're using? I'm planning on getting a total of 10 Western Digital Gold Enterprise 8TB drives, not sure they will work, though.

I don't care for the noise nor if it supported by HP. I just would like to find out in advance if it will work at all.
