Hey!

7 years later, same problem here. Tried everything I could find in every post of every community. Just wanted to clarify you CAN boot from 5th port in Legacy mode as well as AHCI mode. I was able to boot and install WS2022 but the only way to always boot from that specific port is disconnecting every hdd attached to your server. So if you have to install an update, reboot for maintenance or any other option, you must disconnect your hdd to always boot from your SSD. I am still looking for a way to avoid this and set default boot option as port 5 but I'm not really optimistic about this. If anyone finds a solution I'm all ears!

How can i choose the default disk drive to boot on the same controller ? B120 Raidcontroller is off, i dont use this feature..

I can see in the the Setup only a standard boot order like different devices like usb stick, cdrom, floppy or different controller etc. , but not different disk drives ?

whats wrong here ? Any ideas ?

Looks like an issue with the firmware or hidden options elsewhre.

i´m still using ROM 3.0 Bios J06 on microserver. from 7/6/2015

Hello,

I faced the same issue since I wanted to boot from a 2.5inch HDD installed in the ODD drive. In AHCI mode the Microserver seems to support only booting from the first HDD Bay, and the onboard SATA port for the ODD is the fifth one. The workaround applied was to change the SATA controller mode from AHCI to Legacy and then restart. After the restart in BIOS you can find two SATA controllers and you can choose one of them. The first one is the controller for the hot swappable bays in front of the server and the second one is for the onboard SATA connector for the ODD bay.

It's wierd why they did it like this.

Alexandru

Since this server has no UEFI mode, it is always in legacy mode (compared to gen9 proliants)

Gen8 Microserver is BIOS, not UEFI so there is no legacy emulation mode. The 5th port was designated for optical drive and not supported to boot a hard disk.

That being said, many do use it that way. You need to have the SATA controller in B140i RAID mode then you can specify the 5th disk as the boot drive. I have not tried this, but have read this works in the forums here and I'm pretty sure I've seen it mentioned in the home server show forums

I had the exact same problem as I connected a SSD to the seperate sata port, I resolved this after reading the above post about the Sata Leagacy mode that can needs to be selected from the system options first before after a reboot the second sata controller shows up.

Enter bios by pressing F9

- Set the Sata device to Legacy under the System options and reboot and head back into bios.

- Below the option "Standard Boot Order (IPL) there is an option "Boot Controller order"

- Select : "PCI Embedded Intel(R) Sata controller #2

The server will now boot from the seperate sata device (05) and not from the HDD Bay.

Note: I did install a HP SPP update pack I found on the internet, don't know if this matters.
