Several times now I got the message to up date the bios, none of those times did the update start. It stays at 0 even though the window show the file moving from the upload center to the PC icon. I have left it on for 30 minutes and more. would that be because my pc does not require it? HP Pavilion a6418f
mcp61pm+hm bios update

I went to the HP web site and did download it from there and it started to load right away. I have one more question, how safe is it to update a bios and is it necessary.

I only update the bios if there is something important that needs fixing. I haven't had to do it very often, but the important thing is to make sure it isn't interrupted e.g. loss of power, otherwise your bios may be corrupted.

Can the bios be backed up? in case there is a chance a city or state power faillure?
or would the recovery cd's fix that.

I don't know if it is possible to backup/restore bios data. The recovery disks won't work as the bios data is stored on a chip, not on the hard disk. If you are worried about power failure, you could use a UPS.
