Event ID 280 on Windows 2022 Hyper-V Host – Vport QueuePairs of virtual switch

Hello all,
I am seeking help with a seemingly (‘not quite yet’) issue on a new Windows 2022 server.

The server is a HP ProLiant DL 380 10+ v2 with a HPE Ethernet 10/25Gb 2-port 631SFP28 adapter.
This machine is a Hyper-V host running on Windows Server 2022 Datacenter with current patch level.

Using PowerShell, I created a virtual switch with SET, see details below:

While setting up the server and frequently checking the event log for any new errors or warnings, I noticed event ID 280 being listed in the event log numerous times reading:

“VMS Utilization Plan Vport QueuePairs adjusted from requested number (16) to actual (8). Reason: The number requested exceeds the maximum QPs per VPort supported by physical NIC. {…} (Friendly Name: HPE Ethernet 10/25Gb 2-port 631SFP28 Adapter)

Google research could not find mentionable information on this event ID. One downgraded to Win Server 2019 (not a solution), others could solve this event ID with a driver update for their NIC.

I updated to the controller’s firmware / driver to the latest available version which is 223.0.161.0 from 9 Dec 2022 but to no avail.

The server is hosting 11 virtual machines.
I honestly see no issue in the moment; the server seems to operate fine.
However, this warning must be there for a reason, and it keeps me nervous since other people report severe issues with their Hyper-V servers showing the same event ID.

Does anyone have an idea how to solve this?
Is manually changing the number of Vport QueuePairs an option here?

Not much information at HPE or Microsoft, but found some info on other portal. Page# 80

I guess you have already seen this post and updated the NIC drivers.

Hi,

thank you for your reply.

Yes, I found your two linked posts before I publish this post on HPE forum.

Link #1 is a manual for a different software and simply claims that this event (ID 28o) "does not affect system operation".

Link #2 is from a MS forum and the user there mentioned to got rid of this event by updating his NIC to the lasted driver version.

Unfortunately this did not help for me (see my first post above).

For the moment, situation is the same: keep getting these event IDs but the complete systems seems to function normal. I would simply hope it will stay like this but I believe such warnings are not there without reason...

I would suggest to log a support ticket with HPE and or Microsoft to get his rectified.

no updates yet. My server is continuing posting these messages in event log but operating without issues.

I kept this post unsolved as there is no proper explanation on that but after all does not seem to be a real issue...

Same issue here on a DL380 Gen10p; got 7 VMs running using the HPE 10GB SFP+ interface.. Just annoying not to have this resolved. Doesn't seem to have a physical impact on anything though; but creates bunch of tickets in our RMM.

The NIC is the stock P26256-B21 Broadcom BCM57412 Ethernet 10Gb 2-port SFP+ OCP3 Adapter for HPE; but from the specs I really can't see how many Vport QueuePairs it support; perhaps you can tell me?

There are currently 6 virtual machines using a single port on this 10GB NIC card.

Our event logs and alerts from our RMM is flooded with these alerts. Also getting event 260; Failed to move RSS queue 7 from VMQ 3 of switch 1A3F3B80-5BCD-4D11-90F4-449DAE12B9AD (Friendly Name: 10Gb SFP+ vSwitch 1), ndisStatus = -1071448015 .

Hi, the problem persists.

My server is currently running BIOS firmware version 3.20, 10Gb 2-port Base-T BCM57416 OCP3 Adapter firmware version 229.1.123.0 and Windows driver version 229.0.155.0 for the same but the message continues to be logged once after every restart / reboot of the machine.

I am curious to know if anyone has figured this issue out. I have seen other customers with the same problem. MS once again dismisses the error messages, saying that it auto-balances the VMQ requests, so this is a non-issue.
