I have an HP Proliant DL360 Gen10 that I am trying to install Windows Server 2016. When I try to install the OS using assisted install or just boot from CD, I get an error when I choose a drive to install on. The error is "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. for more information, see the setup log files." The drivers are there. The firmware is updated to March 2023. The assisted install partitioned the drives and I can see the partitions and the raid1 configuration. But when I choose the Primary drive I get the error above. Looking through other posts it appears that the Windows Server 2016 OS is older than the SAS HPE EG000300JWEBF HPD5 drives and that I may need the Windows driver to support those drives at firmware revision HPD5. However, I have looked everywhere and I cannot find a driver. I went to the HPE Support Center and chose my server, the HPE Proliant DL360 Gen10 server, then click on Drivers and Software, select the Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and none of the software appears to be a Windows Server 2016 driver or those drives. Am I looking for the right thing in the right place? I ran the firmware update and I can see that both the drives and the controller are at the latest firmware revision.

If I am understanding the other articles correctly I need the driver for the hard drives I would then choose the load driver button when I am installing the OS, choose the driver to load, and then I should be able to choose the primary drive and complete the installation.

Any guidance you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

Hard drive drivers are not available. If you're opting for the manual OS installation approach, you'll have to supply drivers tailored for the Storage controller while setting up the OS.

Retrieve the necessary storage controller driver (varying by controller model) from the HPE website.

Unpack the elements and input the .inf file when prompted to load the driver. This can be done via an external USB key.

Alternatively, you can utilize Intelligent Provisioning to smoothly install the Windows OS. Intelligent Provisioning comes equipped with essential drivers for OS installation, eliminating the need for the aforementioned process.

Thanks,

OK, I am using Intellegnet Provisioning and I can see and load he storage controller driver from the hpdrvs\storage directory. So if that is not the problem. What else could be the problem that I keep getting the error "We couldn't create a new patition or locate the exististing one."? I appreciate your time.

Now I have tried using diskpart to manually configure the disk and I am still getting the same error. Where do I find the setup log files when I am doing an assisted install? I am not finding them. I want to see the error message to see if it leads me down another path at this point.

I cannot install when booting off the CD/DVD or USB drive because I get the message that is cannot create a new partition or locate an existing one. When I try to use intelligent provisioning everything works but when it goes to reboot the server it says that it cannot reboot the server. I can reset the server at that point and it will start running the intelligent provisioning script and then it stops. I can kick off the Windows install and again I get the same error about cannot create a new partition or locate an existing one. I am at a loss for what to do next. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I recommend deleting the array and then reconfiguring it before trying to proceed with the installation.

I appreciate your time. I have deleted and recreated the array many times. Last night I tried to install a newer version of Intelligent Provisioning, which appeared to go through the entire process and reboot, but now F10 does not work to get into Intelligent Provisioning. I downloaded an older version and I am trying to install that now. I did open an HPE case earlier this week and have not heard back. I will follow up on that today as well. Thank you.
