topic RAID 1 to RAID 5? in Operating System - Microsoft

Help,

I have 4 HP Netservers that I want to migrate from RAID 1 (mirrored) to RAID 5
(Stripe Set with parity).

The 2 drives that create the mirror contain a split partition on each drive
containing drives "C" and "D". The operating system is loaded on the C drive
and obviously will not be included in the stripe set. Does anyone know the
easiest way to get the D drive on a stripe set? I already have the 3rd drive
for each system

Thanks

Dale

Dale,

Assumption: C & D are software mirrored. Drive E is a CDROM Drive. Drive C
contains the system and program files and drive D contains only data files.

Easiest way to do it is:

1. Backup Drive D
2. In Disk Administrator you will need to break the mirror for drive D. From
this event, drive F gets created (it's the partition that use to be the mirror
to drive D. This is located on Disk 1)
3. The next step is to delete the partitions associated with drive D and drive
F.
3. The next step will be to select the free space that use to be drive D and
drive F and the free space on Disk 2. Go to Fault Tolerance and click on
Create Stripe Set with Parity.
4. Restore Drive D from backup when completed.
5. End result should be Drive C on Disk 0 mirrored on Disk 1. Drive D
stripped across disk 0,1 and 2.

This is the easiest way that I've done it. The reason that we need to delete
drive D is that unlike mirroring (this process can be done without disturbing
the existing data), striping with parity requires you to start from
scratch(free space only). Hope this helps you out.

Regards,

Gerard Laygui, MCSE, CCNA
