cmos checksum error

I have a problem with my startup of windows 98.
When starting up the computer, a black background with white lettering
comes up with all the system information.
On the last line it says Error 0251: system cmos checksum bad -default
configuration used. click f1 for set up f2 to resume. Then if I click
the f2 (I don't dare to fiddle with set up) the normal windows come up
and it acts normal.
When I use restart for some reason or other, a shorter version comes up
and then when I click f2, a line comes up saying "can not find operating

system" I then have to shut of the computer with the pc shut off and
restart that way. Then the other extended info comes up and I can
proceed from there like at the beginning of this e mail.
I do not quite remember if this started right after my Norton virus
scanner intercepted a virus and put it in guarantine (It could not
remove it) and then I deleted the item in guarantine, or if it started
earlier.
The virus was named: m1c113vuv.zlq (the numbers 1 could be l's I checked

on the symantec web site, but could not find anything with that virus
designation.
I hope you can give me some guide line as to what would be the best
course to remedy this problem.
Can it be done without using the recovery cd's?.
My pc is an HP 6545 C 500 mhz upgraded to 256 sd ram.

hey,

Seems like your CMOS battery is bad. Replace it with a hardware person and see. Also check for any errors in the CMOS setup by entering f1. You may select the default choices, then save and exit.

Sounds like the battery to me also. Batteries normally last between 1 and 3 years.

The operating system not found is that it may be using a different hard drive definition and it cannot find the hard drive.

what is the deal similar problem with xe743 since day no help from support told changed battery,hit f5 and restart now it does it all the time must be something that is being overlooked but not sure where to look
involved process to start the pc turn on pc let it give the 0251 error hit f1 setup, hit f5 then enter then f10 then enter most times will continue to full desktop.
question is there a procedure to clear the cmos of bad memory chip? had that on upgrade
