When I adjusted the setting to "always show" in the customize notifications area, that turned off the hide inactive icons under the taskbar settings. Thanks for the suggestion though.

The Safely Remove Hardware icon (along with the Power Meter) is not always available in the taskbar notification area even after I adjusted the setting to "always show" in the Customize Notifications. I am using Windows XP Pro on a Compaq Evo n610c.

Maybe you could turn off the "hide-inactive icons" button in the taskbar settings...

Sometimes the safely remove hardware icon may not appear if the hardware is not hot-pluggable. OR does this occur if you start your computer up from standby mode?
