I have had the exact same problem with a Compaq Deskpro EX.

Re-installing Win98 retrieves the mouse, but XP just doesn't want to know. I have found that a USB mouse is okay, but on a mini-atx box I don't want to have to use up a port and I can't seem to find a Bios upgrade for the motherboard (GVC mobo - suggestions gratefully received).

Still have the problem and so am coping with USB, but I'd love to hear whether you've got this sorted?

I'd remove the mouse via device manager and clear the CMOS setting.
