topic Re: can not fdisk HD in Operating System - Microsoft

Was there another drive in the system that might have been removed before you
ran fdisk? The question is leading to, are the jumpers set correctly on the
drive for master/slave? Are all the cables seated correctly? Can you hear the
drive whine down during access? Is the drive clicking or whining loudly? Was
another drive added before fdisk was run? Are the heads, cyclinders, sectors of
the drive parameters set correctly in cmos?

I was re-partitioning my hard drive and when I went to exit fdisk it gave me a
error "error writing fixed disk" and did not save my partition information.
That hard drive was working just fine before I did anything so I don't think
there is anything wrong with it. This is on a HP pavilion with a quantum
fireball CR6.4A.

Any help would be appreciated.

Bob,

Question: Can you access the drive after you restart the system?

Yes-You may have a virus. Try using the /mbr switch to wipe out the master
boot record. You might also want to check if you have the correct settings for
the disk in the BIOS.

No-Your drive may have just gone on strike. You will need to get a new one.

Hope this helps you out.

Regards,

Gerard Laygui
MCSE, CCNA

Try pressing either F1, F2 or the del key to go into your CMOS setup on boot up
then set your harddrive to auto in the settings to let the system autodetect
the drive and enter its own parameters for it (sectors, cylinders, heads,
etc.) After you do this try running fdisk again. If the CMOS doesnt
autodetect the harddrive take the cover off the system and make sure the power
cable and the ribbon cable have not come lose from the harddrive then try
reautodetecting the drive in the CMOS. Did you recently add any harddware to
the system or run any kind of software utilities on your system before this
started happening?

Check the CMOS settings of that system and see whether the boot sector has been
set to write protect.
