is it possible to switch the LaserJet 1010 printer into Epson mode? I know that this printer works with the "host based printing" technology. So I'm searching for a driver option to activate that mode ...

There is Epson emulation available for some HP LaserJets :

...but from what I can see it seems the solutions are DIMM based which I don't think host based printers have empty slots for...

But, it might be worth to check with them if they have any (driver) solutions for what you are looking for.
