when the computer is booted there is only a blue screen. The only method of accessing the computer is via the task manager. For some reason the desktop icons disappeared... help!

Hi Renee,
We need a little more info on this.
1. What is your PC-model
2. What is your OS?
3. Is it a clean install?, if not did you install something before this happen? (hardware or software)
4. Does it boot in safe mode? (Hit F8 during boot until you get a menu and choose safe mode)

If you are able to run task manager than go to file-> new task -> type explorer ->OK
than youre desktop icons should appear.

Or reboot your computer and press F8 while booting - booting menu appears , than select Run in Safe mode - it will start minimal Win configuration - than play with Display settings and restart comp again - it can help.

For Windows Xp it may not have any icons.
You can use the start button to chose programs but instead of clicking them, you can right click them then send to the desktop as an icon. You need to make your own icons if you want them. You may have had them and lost them from the desktop by starting up as a new of different user.
