Fill took not working in WORD & Publisher

Op sys win XP home, Office 2003.
The fill tool is not working in Publisher. When you fill an object no colour appears in Normal view, but if you go to print preview you can see the colour. The transparency is set to zero.
In WORD no colour fills in boxes or in word art, and none is seen in print preview. No lines can be coloured.
Things I have tried are:
Changed monitor screen resolution, tried both 16 and 32 bit colour.
Repaired MS Office, Set office back to defaults, uninstalled office and reinstalled.
What now?

Hi Jules,
Have you updated office?
Go to www.microsoft.com and on the left you have "Office Update" (may have to scroll down a bit.
Keep updating untill there are no updates left.

I never heared of this problem BTW, but this should be a good next step,

By the way - how did you find it - I used key words "color" and "fill" to search the MS Knowledge base but didn't get anything.
