problems with multi-bay in presario 17xx series notebook

i have a presario 1700 series notebook....my dvd rom doesnt work at all.... i have connected the floppy drive and it works fine... but when i insert the dvd rom... the system does not detect it i have installed all the versions of windows, linux - inclusing suse, redhat etc... I knwo its not an OS issue... I tried another optical drive a new one... no use... i think the problem is in the atapi gender changer connector... which is a 50 pin female to 60 pin male adapter... it says tiger dvd r2.0 on it... somehow i cannot find a single place where I can buy it... i am wondering whether the problem is in the connector???

Here's a list of the 84 different Presario 1700 systems. I suggest you choose your model and see if there is a newer BIOS or possibly firmware that might solve your problem:
