First of all, you could try to see if you can locate this encmon.dll file, and copy it in your windows directory. Second, if any of the accessories you've installed is hardware fixed into the computer, make sure it is not it that causes the failure message.

I have a HPPavillion M70 that started freezing up when trying to close out
certain programs or to shutdown. Ctl.Alt.Del. does not warm boot and power
button will not work, must be shutdown from powersource. After running a
surface scan on the harddrive I have determined that the harddrive is ok. Now
the computer at startup gives the mess. Smart failure predicted on Hard Disk
0: Quantum BIGFOOT TS12.7A (PM)
Warning: Immediatly back-up your data & replace your hard drive. A failure
may be imminent. Press f1 to cont. I press f1 and windows continues to boot
up. With an error message: a required .DLL file is missing,ENCMON.DLL was not
found (ok). At this point windows is up and my programs are running ok, until
its time to close a program when it freezes again. Please don't tell me I'm
going to have to use my restore disk. I have quite a few accessories and
programs which will take quite a lot of time to reinstall. Is there any way to
fix this without having to use the restore disk?

sounds like a drive problem, most liekly in the area where that .dll file was
have you run a scan disk? ... other wise i would start backing up what ever critical data you have on that drive while you still can
depending on your resources and network ect
ghost your machine, replace the drive and ghost it back on, then replace the .dll if it still asks for it

hope this helps
Jim
