Did you use the driver from the Win98 install or the one that came on the CD with the printer? New drivers for the 840C can be found at the following:

Parallel connection:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/software/dj834en.exe.html

USB connection:

http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/software/dj837en.exe.html

Make sure you use the installation program and not the Windows "Add Printer" function to install the driver.

You might have a parallel cable that isn't up to specs - The deskjet requires good two way communication with the computer to print properly, so it pays not to buy the least expensive parallel. I had a very similar problem when I upgraded to a deskjet without buying a new cable.

Hope this helps,
Michael
