Problems opening excel and word

I can only open excel and word files through the "file, open" function once I have the excel or word program already open. Files will not open if I double click on the icon, I get several error messages or nothing at all.

Perhaps you could post some of the error messages?

Let's try to guess. See in file types (Control Panel / Folder Options / File types) if the extension DOC and XLS are mapped to the correct program. Does the icon of the file looks like the correct program?

seems like the programm path is not defined properly.
Check if the mapped path is correct.

As Jorge mentioned go to the File Types tab. Look at DOC and XLS extensions and see what's there. Select one and click on Advanced.
Select open and click on Edit. Under application you should see something like:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\WINWORD.EXE" /n /dde
Use DDE is selected. DDE message:
[REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")]
Application: WinWord

... and this path must be the same like your start path of word.
Do you have an icon of word at your desktop?
Click it with your right mouse button and check the path.
