All:

P4800 42TB disk System has a failed disk in location 23 (right hand drawerMD600). Is this hot swappable? Conflicting information in Users Guides for P4000, P4800G2, and MDS600.

One says to power down controller for that drawer prior to replacing disk. Another says if disk status shows Safe to Remove status as "Yes" in CMC, hotswap disk and CMC will rebuild from Hot spare to replacement disk.

CMC is 9.0.01 Each (of two) MDS600 Drawer is configured as Raid 1+0 and Networked Raid 10.

What should I expect for time to rebuild back from the Spare to replacement?

Regards,

Louis

time to rebuild of course depends on the size of the disk and your SAN utilization. Our P4500 SAN with 4 nodes and low utilization takes about 4 to 6 hours rebuilding a single 600 GB drive. Rebuild priority in the CMC ("storage" tab in the node details) is set to "low" on all nodes.

Hi Louis

If only 1 drive has failed then it can be replaced on the fly ( Hot swapable).

The following HP P4800 G2 solution components are hot-pluggable; therefore, you do not need

to power down the device before replacing a part:

•

Drives

•

External fans

•

Power supplies

•

Blade disk drives

All other HP P4800 G2 solution components are

not hot-pluggable.

Hello If there is a single drive failure, yes you can go ahead and replace the drive, i mean hot -swappable.Rebuild reate depends on the data and SAN b/w parameters.

However , i would recommend you to collect a Management Bundle and anayze the Logs to have a check on all other H/w in the P4800.Always it is better to check trhe logs to understand, is there any predictive failures are reported in the SAN.

so tell us about this mds600 - you have 70 3.5" sas drives with two or four 3gbps*4(wide) sas connections to a single lefthand?

or do you have two lefthand each with 35 disk?

I could imagine a P822 with 1.5TB of read cache ssd would still be paining to talk to so many drives? I guess that's a good fit for auto-tiering VSA?

Do they still sell the P4x00 with the MDS6000 (6gbps version)?

I was thinking about picking up an MDS600 they go for $400 used with 2 i/o modules and a bit more with all trays but it seems like a serious bandwidth choke point with a total of 12gbps (3gbps x 4) per 35 drives?
