Hi, we have a problem: we need to install vmware esxi 4.1 on the internal sd card on this server, but even with the iso downloaded (here: https://h20392.www2.hp.com/portal/swdepot/displayProductsList.do?category=VIRTVMW) and written on a dvd ... we just have always the same error after selecting SD (4 GB) as target: "installation operation failed:" ..."unable to find the system image to install. This is due to the image not being mounted correctly or the cd-rom not being supported ..."

what to do?

tks

There is another way. Just did it with my ESX hosts. HP is blocking the wright to first block for all not approved SD cards.
you can read it here
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/servers/software/vmware-esx3i/index.html

you can find the hp approved SD card or go by this way

1 - download VMware ESXi 4.0 and Updates from HP - 4.1 -July 2010- ESXi HD-USB-SD Image Installer CD (583772-005.iso)

2 - the most largest file in this iso - IMAGEDD.BZ2 is a compressed ESXi image. unpack it, and put uncompressed IMAGEDD on SD with using dd tool for linux, dd.exe or flashnul for windows.

thats all.

ps - sorry for bad English.

I have 2 identical ML350 G6's acquired 6 months apart.

On the first I used a 2 GB Kingston 50x elite pro SD/2GB-S which is listed by VMWare, and the 583772-003.iso. Worked perfectly.

On the second I decided to purchase the "official" 4 GB HP SD card 580387-B21. I used the HP VMWare 4.1 583772-005.iso. Failed with exactly the same problem as above.

I extracted IMAGEDD.BZ2 from the iso, extracted IMAGEDD from it, and used flashnul to write to the 4GB SD card. Worked like a charm.
