topic 1760 tapedrive incompatible with ESX4.1+ ?? in Operating System - VMware

We have a DL360 ProLiant server w/ an VMware HCL-listed Adaptec SCSI adapter, connected to a LTO4 Ultrium 1760 tape.
The server OS is VMware Esx4.1i. The storage adapter is recognized, but the tape status is marked Red and as Dead on the ESX Configuration Pane. At system boot, however, the Tape is correctly recognized after POST.

HP support says that this tape device is compatible with ESX4.0, but not with ESX4.1, which I find hard to believe. Has anybody experienced similar problems or does this tapedevice work with ESX4.1 ?

Yes, on VMware's advice, I changed the SCSI-adapter to an Adaptec-device on the HCL. This didn't change anything. Next step will be to try with another 1760 tape device.
