I am no longer having this issue. At one point I decided the problem went away when I changed all my Polyserve services to start up automatically versus manually (I had them set to manually bc these services take so long to reboot with Poly). Not sure if starting up the services manually after a reboot was somehow causing port 1434 to act up or what.

I have two nodes of my Polyserve 3.6.1 cluster that house only SQL 2000 instances. Lately, on these servers the Polyserve Instance Aliasing service, port 1434, keeps getting taken by a SQL service. I can fix my failing over and rebooting the problem node. And a few hours later, the port is taken. I use to have this problem when we first implemented periodically, now it is getting really aggravating. Does anyone else have this problem?

I lied. Issue occurred yesterday. I have upgraded to 3.6.1 hotfix 3 and sql 3.6.2. I'll let you know if that finally resolves the issue.

I went a long time without this occurring. We just did some network work this weekend on one of the nodes and the issue is back with a vengence. IA service is failing and aliases not working every 6 hrs-12 hrs. To "fix" which is painful, I have to fail over all instances (only have one backup server) and then reboot the problem node to "release" the alias. It happens on either node - it does not matter.

ia.log shows:

2011-Dec-12 06:42:07 [4056] IA service: Event was signalled, might need to exit
2011-Dec-12 06:42:07 [4056] IA service: Event was signalled, might need to exit
2011-Dec-12 07:12:46 [6576] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:12:46 [6576] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:12:46 [10664] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:12:46 [6576] Router: Removing..10.77.44.44:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:12:46 [6576] Router: Removing..10.77.45.18:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:12:46 [6576] Router: Removing..10.77.45.232:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:12:46 [6576] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:12:51 [8448] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:12:51 [8448] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:12:51 [7272] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:12:51 [8448] Router: Removing..10.77.44.44:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:12:51 [8448] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:12:53 [10456] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:12:53 [10456] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:12:53 [11132] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:12:53 [10456] Router: Removing..10.77.44.44:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:12:53 [10456] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:13:01 [3240] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:13:01 [3240] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:13:01 [3336] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:13:01 [3240] Router: Removing..10.77.44.44:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:13:01 [3240] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:13:06 [1392] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:13:06 [1392] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:13:06 [7896] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:13:06 [1392] Router: Removing..10.77.44.44:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:13:06 [1392] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:13:21 [9640] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:13:21 [9640] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:13:21 [10808] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:13:21 [9640] Router: Removing..10.77.44.44:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:13:21 [9640] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:13:51 [3260] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:13:51 [3260] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:13:51 [3292] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:13:52 [3260] Router: Removing..10.77.44.44:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:13:52 [3260] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:14:22 [11224] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:14:22 [11224] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:14:22 [7044] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:14:22 [11224] Router: Removing..10.77.44.44:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:14:22 [11224] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433
2011-Dec-12 07:14:52 [11156] IA service: Reading settings from the registry
2011-Dec-12 07:14:52 [11156] Router: Removing legacy ips from the node
2011-Dec-12 07:14:52 [10640] Router: Starting Sql Alias Manager...
2011-Dec-12 07:14:52 [11156] Router: Removing..10.77.46.22:1433

As before, this only happens on the SQL 2000 nodes. I know on SQL 2005 the SQL Browser has to be disabled but I have no idea with 2000.
