I am trying to configure a Cannon Image Runner 550 printer that is part of our network to the HP/UX Server. This printer does not have a Jet Direct card, however, it does have an IP address. Is it possible to hook this printer up without the Jet Direct? How do I do this?

You could try to declare your printer as a remote printer

Could you please provide me a little more information on your idea. I am going to give it a try, but I am not clear on what steps I should take in SAM to make this happen.

Thanks
Alyson

The easiest way is to use sam /Printer and plotter/add Remote printer.
Give as host name the name you have put for the IP-ADDR in /etc/hosts you can give the same name to the remote printer name, I usually declare the printer as BSD and allow anyone to cancel a request (up to you...)

Good luck
Victor

OK, I tried to set this up as a remote printer. I am getting a print queue, I am able to do an lp command and send a job to the queue, and that is the end of it. I am not sure what information I was to put in the remote system name. I could use a little more help if possible.

Thanks,
Alyson

Hi:

I use remote printers setup through SAM as a standard.

The "printer name" is the name of the printer on the UNIX side. The "Remote System Name" is the name of the LPD host as defined in your /etc/hosts or in DNS. SAM will verify that this is defined. The "Remote Printer Name" is the port name, usually something like lpt1 or lpt1_passthru. Checking the "BSD" type is generally OK. Checking "allow cancel by anyone" is fine too. Hopefully this helps.

...JRF...

I recently had to do this for several canon imagerunners. I suggest you remove the current entry and re-add it using SAM. You do have to set it up as a remote printer, and the remote printer name must be "print". You will also need to check the box that reads:"remote printer is on a BSD system" on the add remote printer dialog. Ours works fine.

Thank you both for your assistance here. The piece that I was missing was the remote printer name had to be print. Once I did this things started to print!
