Good Backup

I have made a make-recovery and did an fbackup of the file system. I want to really trash the system, so I can test my plan. I should note this is my test box. Any ideas???

Hi Jim,

It seems that you have backed up everything. How much impact will it have if you can't recover the server from the backup? It might be prudent to take a further full fbackup to cover yourself in the event of tape failure.

How many disks do you have? If I was cautious then I would remove my non-root volume groups with vgexport then reboot from the ignite tape and recover to one of my old data disks. If this exercise failed then I could still boot from my original disk, review the problem and maybe do another make_recovery. That way you could test your plan without burning all your bridges. It does depend on how expendable the server is though.

You could just put in a new disk and boot from the make_recovery tape.
I used mediainit to wipe out the files on a disk and then did the make_recovery to it.

Hi:

Depending on just how far you want to go...

1. Verify the recovery tape (see below) and frevover a data file from a non-root volume group to verify your procedures there.

2. Boot from the Ignite tape but stop when it offers to destroy your existing OS.

3. Actually do a reinstallation of the OS and of all your data files just as if the server had been physically destroyed.
