Strongly recommend a cold install as the upgrade from 10.20 to 11.00 is extremely difficult and not worth the time wasted on trouble shooting peculiar errors that are rarely ever seen.

The cold install can be completed in an hour and a half either by cdrom or ignite tape of another 11.00 server of the same class.

Gather up all of your system documentation first and then cold install. Here are some example documents to get:

ioscan, vgdisplay -s, strings /etc/lvmtab, gateway ip address, netmask, ntp ip, nis ip, netconf static routes, etc.
The best way to my knowledge is to do a fresh install of HPUX11.0.

It has been a pain in upgrading from 10.20 to 11.0 with the LAN drivers and other components.

There are lot of forums questions based on this.
you can do a search on the same.

There are a wide range of views all the way.

Just check these two threads

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xa779ef70e827d711abdc0090277a778c,00.html
http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0xce3749c5ae73d4118fef0090279cd0f9,00.html

Hi:

First, *don't* update from 10.20 to 11.0. Cold install 11.0 instead. Doing an upgrade from 10.20 to 11.0 has not been met with a high degree of success. This has been discussed in this Forum extensively during the last two years.

Cold installation offers you the change to resize your filesystems and it offers you the chance to begin anew with *only* patches and files belonging to the new release.

There are a multitude of threads in this forum describing cold-installion procedures. Do a keyword search in the ITRC community using keys like "10.20", "install", and "vgexport" and you will be well rewarded with tips.

I would strongly consider moving from 10.20 to 11.11 since 11.0 now has an end-of-life date:

http://www.software.hp.com/RELEASES-MEDIA/history/slide2.html

Whatever your choice (11.0 or 11.11) the installation guides offer an excellent insight into the requirements of your server before you begin:

For 11.0:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-1843/5187-1843.html

For 11.11:

http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/5187-1350/5187-1350.html

Regards!

...JRF...

I finished upgrading one of my 10.20 box to 11.0

Simplest method :

TAKE A IGNITE TAPE BACKUP OR COMPLETE DATA BACKUP IN CASE RESTORE IS REQUIRED.

1) Note down the firmware version of your CPU. It can be seen when your system boots up.

Check /etc/.supported_bits for 32/64 bit os and hardware compatibility

It should specify whether your system will support a 64 bit OS or not.

2) Download the latest firmware version from patch repository - http://forums.itrc.hp.com - then click on maintenance and support - patches - firmware.

3) Any EISA network card on your system won't be supported by 11.0 hence make sure you have a PCI card.

4) Start a cold install from the CD.

5) Everything runs great. Restore your data from ignite tape.

-Anil
