Need Advice on HP-UX 11.0 (Upgrading from 32-bit to 64-bit)

I need to upgrade our production server from 32-bit to 64-bit running under HP-UX 11.0, so that I can install Oracle9.

Are there any pitfalls that I need to know about ? (I have got the documentation from the Troubleshooting section of the 11.0 Upgrade Guide)

Does anybody know if current 32-bit applications will still work OK (i.e. Oracle8)?

Will I still be able to build software that works on HP-UX 11.0 32-bit (presumably using the different flags on the C Complier and the linker) ?

Any info will be appreciated.

Hi,

We accidentally built an 11.0 box as 32bit and the only way to really get it to 64bit is to reload the operating system. The upgrade is extremely hard and one of our guys tried it for a couple of days before he had to give up and reload it. HP told us that if you've loaded any software beyond the standard packages you can pretty much forget about being able to upgrade to 64-bit.

Your 32-bit apps should run fine on 64-bit 11.0, and you should be able to build software that runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit 11.0 boxes.

It's safer to perform a COLD Install, then install your applications.

I'm not sure about Oracle, as we have been installing 9.2 on 11i servers, so I'm going to say "probably not".

Throughout this forum I have seen lots of replies saying that you should do a cold install rather than an upgrade when moving to a new version of the O/S. After all the years that HP-UX has been around can the upgrade proces really be so flaky that it is advisable not to use it? Also, what about all the customisation that will have been done over the years, this will all have to be re-applied.
