The Oracle data files from the Sun system are not compatible with HP Oracle files. You'll have to export the database, create a new database on the HP box and then import. I've done this before (not from Sun necessarily) and it's really not that big a deal.

Just MAKE SURE to export using the "SYS" login, not the "SYSTEM" login, and you'll have a MUCH better time with your export/import cycle. If you're having trouble with this - I find it sometimes easiest to move to the new system using the same variant of Oracle. That is , if you're having trouble with your import/export, and you're at let's say 8.1.7x on the Sun box, go ahead an import on 8.1.7 on the HP box.

That being said however, if you're planning an upgrade to 9.x for instance, go ahead and *try* a move all the way to 9.x. Most times, this works fine, and would save you a lot for work if it works fine. I guess the moral of this story is plan yourself a week or two (or three if it's getting tough) to play with it, and nail down a good procedure.

Hi,

We need to move Oracle data from Sun to HPUX,currently the data is in sun storage media 5* T3ES(RAID1+0) 4* A5200(RAID1). And the total volume size is about 5000GB. Now as I move Oracle to HPUX I also need to move this data to HP storage.

I want to know how it can be done? Also to which class of HP-UX machines these storage can be connected to.

what is approximate time I would need?

Pl. help

Thanks
Karthik

Hi

As fas as I know you cannot use oracle datafiles from one Unix system on an other Unix system (same for windows) because of special header informations in the files, ...

So install new oracle on HP, full database export on SUN and full database import on HP.

Chris

You can use ftp for the transfer, but there is a migration process that must be followed step by step to migrate a oracle/solaris database to a oracle/hp-ux database.

As far as transfer times goes, that depens on the speed of the network cards, the network swtich and the backplane speed of the switch.

If you move to HP made disk arrays, it will work with virtually any current HP-9000 server equipped with a fibre card.

You can also connect to EMC arrays, or even Seagate's Xiotech arrays, though there are limitations there. If you can afford it, stay with HP.

With all those variables, I'd leave at least a week for data transfer, but more important database conversion. That's the big hurdle in the project. Oracle's documentation and support are simply not as good as HP's to put it mildly.

SEP

A full database export on the source side, and a full import on the other is what you'll need to do. However, this may take more time than you'll have if you're in production.

Here's an idea: export your HP disks to the Sun system via NFS. Then tell Oracle to start writing its various and sundry files on both systems simoultaneously (be prepared for a lot of network traffic though). After a while, you'll have two copies of all files. Then you can shut down Oracle on the Sun, and bring it up on the HP (I assume that you have Oracle installed and happy on the HP side first). Then shut down the Sun, and reconfigure the name and IP address of the HP to the Sun's old info. Bring it back up, and you should be up and running.

Chris

Hi,

Thanks for all that valuable Info. We are planning to do a export and import of data as you suggested. One more quiry .. is it possible to connect the Sun Storage arrays to HP-UX and access the data (not that of Oracle but we have some more data on it)?? [T3ES and A5200 ]. If yes which class of HP-UX system these arrays can be connected to??. Is it possible to access the Veritas Diskgroups and Filesystems that are created on a Solaris box from hp-ux??. Is there any additional stpes involved for doing this?? Pl. let me know

Thanks
Karthik

Hi Karthik,

I have seen environments with the following configurations:
- HP Tru64 UNIX + EMC Symmetrix 8430 storage system
- Sun Solaris 5.8 + HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array
(EVA)

I am not an expert in this area, but am sure something can be done - of course if there is no "endianess of words" problem.

For better responses to your query, why don't you post another question - in the Planning or System Administration category?

Best Regards
Yogeeraj
