If the C180 is certified at all, you don't need to do anything. The installation process will detect whether the machine can run 32 bits or 64 bits.

Most hardware will run one or the other.

If there is a choice, you'll see it in the installation interface.

To start the installation, put the Core OS CD(hopefully the latest) in the CD drive, reboot the system.

shutdown -ry now

If its off just turn it on.

There will be a 10 second prompt letting you hit a key to intervene.

If there is no OS, you can just let it boot off the CD.

If there is an OS, you'll need to type this command

sea
hit enter
Look for the device most likely to be the CD-ROM

Bo p# replace # with the number of the CD-ROM

Take N for interacting with the IPL.

You will then come up to a text base, windows tab installatoin interface. You can set networking, hostname, filesystem sizes, anything you need to do.

If you have data on the machien, back it up before you start. Don't bother with the upgrade, its not worth the time.

You should check to see if your machine is certified for 11.00. If its not, this will be a frustrating if not impossible project.

SEP

When installing 11, or 11i, if the system is capable of utilising 64 bit it will. If it is only a 32 bit capable system it will only install the 32 bit version. There is an area during the initial phase where you can change this if the system is capable of running both 64 and 32.

You should always have the latest firmware installed on a fresh install where possible.

Although not absolutely necessary, you should probably make sure the Firmware version is current (it is either 5.8 or 6.1 for a C-180). It does support both 32 and 64-bit.

The reason for the firmware update is that several members of this forum (myself included) have run into a problem. After installing HP-UX 11.XX, the system will not recognize the boot drive exists. The firmware patch seemed to fix it, although the patch notes did not specifically mention this.

You can get the patch as a download for tape off the ITRC. I don't think they retro-fitted the older firmware into regular patches.

Hello,
there is no chance to do it without a DAT drive. The firmware update for C180 is configured to work from tape only. You may use any external SCSI-SE DDS2 tape drive.

---
Stefan
